Meet the bloggers: Sally Poulson

Sally%20P%20%282%29.jpgOh, crafting, you cruel mistress. You take my time and my money, you make me say things like "Fifty dollars? I'm not paying fifty dollars for that when I could bloody well make it myself!" When you're good, you're so very good – but when you're bad, baby, you're a heartbreaker.

My name is Sally. I've been crafting for close to 20 years. I'm 27 now, but my creative endeavours go as far back as age 7, when my burgeoning craftiness created a series of memorable (and damaging) childhood fashion statements – from leopard skin stretch pants, to a myriad of clip-on earrings, to a homemade NKOTB t-shirt that I'd rather just not even talk about.

Since then I've tried pretty much everything under the sun; sewing, knitting, cross-stitch, embroidery, plastic canvas, latch hooking, book making, scrapbooking … all to varying degrees of success. I have some beautiful hand stitched purses … but I've also set my fingers in resin. You win a few, you lose a few.

Though I've tried pretty much every craft around, crocheting is my specialty. At least ten years before Debbie Stoller made crochet cool, I was mackin' on pattern books available at my LYS (local yarn store) circa 1991. I would create mammoth acrylic ponchos, sweaters and winter wear that not even a Brady would be caught dead in. I once crocheted my brother a pair of pants on a dare. Last year I crocheted a friend a life sized greyhound for Christmas.

My point is this – crafting rules because everybody can find their "thing". I have failed at more crafts than you will ever even consider trying - knitted sweaters with sleeves that reach my knees; skirts hemmed so that the back is, mysteriously, 7 cm shorter than the front. I've sewn fingers, stepped on knitting needles and accidentally silkscreened my ironing board. And despite all of the (rather spectacular) mash ups, I've managed to create some really great, memorable projects.

Hey, if I can do it, anyone can. [Sally Poulson]
