A far greener alternative is to re-use all those old plastic bags that are still knocking about your house. Nezumi World has a good selection of crochet patterns for creating plastic bags from your plastic bags and this Recycled Plastic Carryall knitting pattern from the excellent Erika Knight is a whole lot less fugly than many of plastic patterns I've seen.
