Crafting with food: Decorating your plates

CabbagePig.jpgI’ve just moved into a new house and it seems like a good time to have a housewarming party. When I threw college parties, finger foods were not really on the menu. As long as there were chips and dip, people were happy. Now I want to do a bit more than open a bag of potato chips and put out a bowl of salsa, so I’ve been exploring different ways to, in effect, play with my food...

I’ll probably stick to some pretty garnishes, but maybe I’ll give food sculpture a chance a la Joost Elffers. His food creations have been inspiring people to make animals from orange peels and heads of cabbage.

Kungfoodie has an ongoing list of 101 Ways to Play With Your Food and, really, his results are impressive! That iPod is made from banana slices, apple pieces, and spaghetti! Then there’s the International Edible Book Festival. Every book is completely tasty from the prose right down to the pages.

There is so much that can be done with food that I am determined to move beyond placing a sprig of parsley on a plate and calling it done. And if I am unlucky and we run out of food, my guests can always eat the decorations!
