Knitting with anything you can get your hands on (or around)

bigknitting.jpg Gone are the days when knitting was all about little old ladies sitting by the fire in their rocking chairs knitting chunky sweaters and talking about the war. Though knitting can still be wool and the serene sound of clicking, nowadays it can also be the clanking of heavy duty machinery and the rustling of cold, hard cash.

Dave Cole’s knitted work takes unexpected materials and knits them into something even more unexpected. Among his fantastic creations are the cute-but-not-cuddly bears knit from lead ribbon and Kevlar (the stuff they make bullet proof vests with), a bowl knit from strips of licence plates, and a fabulous Money Dress knitted in single dollar bills (so the wearer can literally look like a million dollars).

Perhaps the most awe-inspiring of Cole’s projects is a humongous American flag knit with recycled street lamp posts and building-site excavator machines. The project took Cole and his team two weeks, and the process involved not only two excavator machines but also brave souls atop a cherry picker to transfer the giant stitches from needle to needle. The results are quite frankly jaw-dropping.

After seeing what Cole can do with everything and anything you may never throw out anything again.
