Meet the Bloggers: Lauren Y.

lauren.jpgHi! My name is Lauren, I'm 25 years old and I'm from Ontario, Canada. Some of my recent work (a set of Pac Man fridge magnets) was featured on Crafty Crafty last week.

I'm a graduate from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario with a degree in English, and a diploma in Television Broadcasting. While I am currently employed as a video editor for a national television station, my main passions are creating music and anything creative and crafty. I love to create new projects with whatever materials I can get my hands on. My favourite crafty ventures at the moment include knitting, book binding and journal making, needlepoint, and crafts inspired by video games. My favourite materials include paper, felt, plastic, beads, pinback buttons, wool, and fabric. You can check out some of my work at my Etsy Shop, 'Lost Mitten'.

I'm admittedly a bit of a geek; I grew up with a love for computers and video games. Long before the days of the Internet, I used to search around local BBS's in the hopes of finding games that could run on my first computer, a 286 with EGA graphics. I have always loved playing video games, from the original Nintendo Entertainment System to the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS of today. Combining my love for video games and craftiness, I love to make anything inspired by video game characters. This extends from Perler Bead creations to needlepoint, which both lend perfectly to 8-bit and 16-bit designs.

I also love to recycle old materials to create something new and useful from them. My love for book binding and creating journals originated in turning old Nancy Drew novels and Reader's Digest hardcovers into blank page diaries. I am one of the few people that I know who actually enjoys waking up early on a Saturday morning to go exploring at yard sales in the hopes of finding some new crafty materials.

In addition to crafting, I love performing and recording music. I am a classically trained pianist and have been playing since the age of four. I also play the guitar, bass guitar, and the clarinet. I am currently in an experimental rock band with my fiancé, Paul. We love to create sounds and noise from anything that we can get our hands on - you can listen to our music at our website and Myspace page.

Most of the crafts that I make are either for myself or Paul, and versions of these crafts eventually find their way into my Etsy Shop. I also maintain my own blog where I write about my crafts or other talented individuals. I look forward to sharing some of my creations with you through writing for Crafty Crafty!
