This weekend I was browsing the clearance racks and they had some stretchy velvet tunics on sale for $4.99! I am not the type who wears stretchy velvet tunics but I AM the type who wears stretchy velvet skirts. So my crafty impulses had me grabbing a shirt in a size that would fit my hips and heading for the checkout line.
Turning a shirt into a skirt is a really simple altered clothing project. Find a shirt with fabric you love. In my case, I just couldn’t pass up the fuchsia color and great texture. Make sure you pick a longer, tunic-style top unless you are prepared to make and wear a micro-mini.
More altered clothing: Changing the look of a garment with buttons
When you get your skirt home, use sharp scissors to cut the fabric straight across from armpit to armpit. Set the top aside for now – you can use it to make a DIY shrug later. Take the resulting tube of fabric and fold over a half-inch at the top. Stitch the folded-over fabric, but be sure to leave a little bit open so that you can feed a piece of elastic into the channel you created for a waistband.
I dyed some white lace baby blue and then added that to the bottom of my skirt. You can add any sort of trim you like to make a totally custom skirt. No one will ever know it was a shirt – that is, unless you tell them so they’ll be impressed by your awesome crafty skills!
