Worldwide Knit In Public Day

I hear that Worldwide Knit In Public Day is coming up on Saturday June 9th. How exciting!

Okay, to be fair, I consider every day to be knit in public day and am frequently found knitting in cafes, at the library, and on the bus. But I don't see many other people knitting in public, and am distressed by this state of affairs. I'd like to encourage all knitters to come out, come out, wherever you are. Nearly every time I knit in public, someone asks me about it. So many people used to knit, wish they could knit, know someone who knits, and are generally intrigued by the whole thing. I think this upcoming event is a perfect time to invite such people to give this wonderful craft a try.

Danielle Landes set up the site (linked above) where quite a few groups from many countries have signed up to participate. Even if, like me, you missed her deadline for registering, you can still get involved by choosing a time a place to meet, and spreading the word in your local knitting circles, craft groups, yarn shops and mailing lists. Check Danielle's site for more suggestions for organizing the event.

In my city (Vancouver, B.C., Canada) I'm calling this event Big Fat Groovy Knit In Public Day, because I think that has a certain ring to it. A bunch of knitters, some crocheters, and some knitters-to-be who are learning for the occasion, are going to congregate in a local cafe or park and do our bit in honour of the day. We're going to bring extra yarn and knitting needles for those who want to spontaneously join us. I hope this will be the start of a new surge of public knitting. For folks in Vancouver, you can check my blog for updates on time and location of our gathering.

Just think what a good feeling we'll get from knitting with friends and strangers, and knowing that people around the world are doing the same thing. I hope to see you on June 9th!
