Craft in Progress: Jaywalker socks

Jaywalker1.JPG

Sometimes I just HAVE to knit. No other craft will do. That's when I turn to socks. Most sock patterns are interesting enough to keep me focuses, but small scale enough that I'll actually finish them. That's why I've starting another pair of Jaywalkers.

I settled on the Jaywalker pattern by knit blogger Grumperina because the yarn I pulled from my stash was a self-striping sock yarn. I'm using Fun and Stripes by Lana Grossa. I've started half a dozen different sock patterns with this yarn and frogged every project. The stripes are narrow and the colors are quite strong so they overwhelm any textured fabric. Jaywalker's angles will be the perfect showcase for the stripes and the bias of the fabric will make the stripes more visually interesting. I would highly recommend this pattern to all but the most inexperienced of knitters.

The pattern itself is fabulously easy. I'm barely 6 rows in to the pattern portion of the leg and I have already memorized the two-row repeat. The directions are clear and, for people dedicated to toe-up socks, there are variations on the instructions linked to on Grumperina's Jaywalker page.

There's also a gallery, featuring photos of (as of June 15, 2007) 750 pairs of Jaywalkers sent in by knitters around the world. I browsed through the gallery to get an impression of how different yarns looked in this pattern - that's when I decided it was perfect for my striping sock yarn.

This project is speeding along quite nicely. Hopefully I'll soon have a finished sock to show you!
