"A long time ago in a galaxy far away" I was summoned to make an egg holder with a difference as a gift for someone's husband. Apparently he is a devoted Star Wars fan and has wanted an egg holder for years, so we creatively combined the two.
With the celebration of the 30 years of Star Wars it was not difficult to find a magazine with a whole article of the old movies and a full array of fantastic pictures of all the characters. So allowing "the force to be with" me I began my endeavour of combining Jedi masters and storm troopers with paint, modge podge and varnish...
What you need:
A wooden item that you would like to decorate (in my case the egg holder)
Black paint (acrylic water-based)
Modge podge / Mod podge
Paint brushes
Scissors
Water based varnish
Rough and very fine sandpaper
Dish washer liquid soap
Star Wars pictures - either wrapping paper, colour photo copies or magazine pictures
(Do not use thin paper or else it will tear or disintegrate. Home printed pictures are also not recommended as the colours will run)
Take any blank item (this being the egg holder) and sand till smooth with rough sand paper.
Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
Paint one coat of black acrylic water-based paint and allow to dry. Paint 2 coats if need be.
Cut out your pictures and stick as desired with the modge podge. Use a the modge podge generously when using as glue.
Make sure that the paper does not crease - it is best to use your finger to smooth out creases.
Once you are satisfied that the item is decorated to your desire start applying the modge podge.
This is done by applying a thin layer of modge in even brush strokes, moving in one direction (i.e. left to right).
Allow to dry thoroughly (usually 30 minutes).
Once the first layer of modge is fully dry apply a second layer in the same manner but now in the opposite direction (i.e. top to bottom).
Repeat the above steps till you have done about 8 layers of modge podge.
Once the "modging" is complete take the fine sand paper (make sure it is the finest you can find) and soak in soapy water.
VERY gently sand the item in circular movements with the fine, soapy sand paper.
This will give the product a better finish.
Wipe the item down with a damp cloth.
Once this is all done, varnish with a water base varnish and allow it to dry over night. Re-varnish if desired.
Well there you have it and what more could you want than Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher all in one crafty item!
