I'm opening myself up wide open here by posting this, but I know you'll all be kind! Maybe it's appropriate that Friday is traditionally 'crafts gone wrong' day!! But, I'm pleased with my first ever attempt at applique, and my daughter seems to love it. Basically I'm a frustrated mum who can never find cool, slightly spooky/hippy clothing for my little girl. I've toyed with the idea of making her clothes since she was born, but I just never seemed to get the time. I thought customising would be a good place to start, and applique can just look so cool. I've decided from the start that any fabrics I use will be recycled, so I went to the local charity shops and bought several children's t-shirts to cut up (the 3 used here cost a total of £3).
You can probably guess I cut the design free-hand. I used a small amount of fabric glue to hold it all together, then applied the design with a little more glue onto one of my daughter's old t-shirts. Lastly I ran around all the edges with a basic hand stitch. I realise it will probably fall apart in the wash, but it is a prototype so I'm prepared for that.
What it has done is set me on an applique frenzy, with a million ideas buzzing around my head! My plan is to do a few more for my daughter, using my sewing machine for the next ones. Then I will start making them for my friend's kids. Before long, I will be so good that everyone will want a Tiki Mama original!! Watch this space!
Here's a close up of the design, so you can see how badly sewn together it is! BTW...it's an owl! hehe
