How to remove a blood spot from fabric

Needle.jpg

Last night I was working on a fancy hem for a skirt I’m making. Because there are some scallops and waves to the hem, I had to turn off my sewing machine and work on the hem by hand. Which is very satisfying but, if you’re clumsy like me, rather dangerous! I wasn’t paying close enough attention, my needle slipped, and next thing I knew there was a spot of blood on my lovely fabric.

Luckily, there is a simple trick my great-grandmother taught me when I was learning how to sew that will clean blood off of almost any fabric without taking your sewing project to the cleaners. Place a clean paper towel or napkin (or scrap of absorbent fabric like a hand towel) underneath your spotted fabric. Then use your own saliva to moisten the area and blot.

Sounds a bit odd, but the enzymes in your salvia will break down the enzymes in your blood, preventing staining. For some reason, this will only work with your own blood and saliva, so don’t go asking your friend to spit on your sewing project.

Your project might need rinsing once it is complete, but you won’t have to use any fancy chemical cleaners or stain removers and the blood spot will be completely gone. This will also work on manufactured garments and with small cuts.
