Review: The Ultimate Sourcebook of Knitting and Crochet Stitches

sourcebook.jpgA Reader's Digest publication, The Ultimate Sourcebook of Knitting and Crochet Stitches is a wonderful resource. I borrowed this book from my local library, but I really wish I could keep it. For someone like me, who both knits and crochets, this book is ideal. I often envision a project but am not sure whether I want it to be knitted or crocheted. This book gives me a place where I can easily compare different patterns from both techniques. A total of more than 900 stitch patterns are detailed in this book.

The book is divided into two large sections, one for knitting and one for crochet. In each, some basic instruction on technique is given first, and then the stitch patterns are presented. They're organized into categories such as lace patterns and edgings, which is a very sensible approach. Each pattern is illustrated with a colour photograph, and accompanied by a skill rating of easy, intermediate or experienced. Each one states the multiple of stitches required. They're also rated for the draping quality of the fabric.

Whether for knit and crochet designers, or beginners wanting to try swatches of new patterns, this book is a great resource.
