Wednesday wearables: I want to hang out at the Stitch Lounge
The Stitch Lounge, located in San Francisco, California, is a drop-in sewing lounge that is open to the general public. Think of it as a sewing circle you can go to whenever you feel like it.
The philosophy behind Stitch is also really appealing to me - it's a women-owned and operated shop that is designed to encourage community and creativity. To that end, they supply the machines - including some wonderful industrial quality machines I know I can't afford to own - and the workspace while their customers supply the inspiration.
In addition to the drop-in hours, Stitch offers classes on everything from sewing basics to something called Subversive Garment Reconstruction. Sounds like a class in altering clothes with both confidence and attitude to me.
If altering your own clothes is still a bit scary, there is even a Boutique, full of one of a kind creations and offerings from local designers.
There is also a book, Sew Subversive, that is going on my wishlist. I'll let you know what I think when I order it and read it! Now, if only I weren't on the wrong coast for hanging out at the Lounge.
