Maxi dresses are ten-a-penny on the high street at the moment, so if you've already bought one and found that it's useless for muddy festivals, or you fancy a bargain in the sales I've come up with some ideas for converting your maxi dress into something more wearable. The one on the left is £25 from Miss Selfridge.
First off you can simply trim the dress to the knee or mid-thigh then fold, iron and sew a hem. For the non-sewers you can buy some hemming tape and press hem with damp tea towel under iron for 18 seconds. If you're a more confident sewer you could add some interfacing to the discarded fabric and make a cuff for the bottom of the dress. Using the widest stitch on your sewing machine gather the raw edge of the dress and secure by oversewing. Remember to decrease the pressure on your presser foot so the ruffles aren't smoothed out. Sew the cuff to the ruffled edge and voila! A cool bubble hem that's guaranteed not to get muddy.
