Crafty how-to guides: Bubble Wrap Curtains

IMG_0455.JPG

Anytime I buy something even remotely fragile, it comes wrapped in bubble wrap. And while popping the little bubbles can be an immediate stress reliever, I was looking for more ways to recycle these fantastic plastic sheets. After all, there is always Virtual Bubble Wrap if I am just looking to pop the stuff.

And then it hit me. Instead of traditional window sheers, why not make a window treatment out of bubble wrap?

For these curtains, I used two panels of bubble wrap. Each panel is 12 inches wide and 3 feet long. Your windows will probably be shaped and sized differently, so play with the bubble wrap you have available (or check out your local office supply store) until you have a panel that pleases you.

I wanted the panels to lay flat to help preserve the airiness of the window treatment. That's also why I chose a medium blue double-fold bias tape to bind the edges. Anything too dark would have made the whole thing feel too heavy. To sew the bias tape on, pop the bubbles around the edge. That will make it a lot easier to attach the bias tape and the bubbles won't snap on your presser foot. Handle the bubble wrap like a delicate material.

Set grommets, using a grommet setter, along the top. I used 1 1/4 inch grommets. Then I used O-rings to make a short little chain from each grommet. Play around with your curtain rod, the grommets, and various methods of attaching the curtain. There are so many possibilities!

Hang your curtains and enjoy the pop art effect.
