Ben Hawkins takes junk and sculpts it into fanciful creations. The Kansas City area mechanic displays his work on his site, Whimsical Rubbish. Hawkins, brother of Matt Hawkins (featured here recently for his paper toy creations), collects a vast array of plastic and metal junk, old tools, and other discarded items, and fashions them into quirky creatures with amusing faces. The style ranges from cartoonish to eerily beautiful, as evidenced by the two examples shown here. He offers no description of his work or any statements of his vision or purpose, but simply displays the finished creations. It's fun to look first at the overall effect of each sculpture, and then to pick out the various pieces that comprise it.
