I posted recently about some dumpster diving finds and my plans for them. This tecni-color room screen entered my life as hinged and slatted doors on a curbside. The doors were carted home to the workshed, where I cleaned them off of the grime and dirt they had acquired. I removed all the hardware - and was careful to save the hinges and screws. My goal was to invest as little money as possible into this project.
Once I had everything cleaned and taken apart, I opened up the shed doors and started spray painting. It's very important to have good ventilation when you are working with spray paint. The fumes are not good for you. A good cross breeze will keep your work area fresh, but it will also carry the paint mist everywhere. So be sure to put down a drop cloth and wear old clothes.
I chose my colors based on some paint chips I liked and on the colors of my recently recovered couch. The lighter colors required more paint, so be sure to buy enough. Otherwise you, like me, will wind up making multiple trips to the hardware store!
Once everything is dry, I screwed the hinges back in and positioned them so that I could connect all four panels. Now, the large intake vent of my air conditioner is concealed but the air flow is not blocked. Not too shabby for a day of painting and about US$24.
