A while back, I reviewed the book Teach Yourself Visually Crochet, and was very impressed with it. So when I heard about another book in the "Read Less - Learn More" series, I had to take a look. Teach Yourself Visually Knitting, by Sharon Turner, is a solid and decent resource.
Here is another well-organized book with clear and very detailed instructions, accompanied by vivid photographs. Many topics are covered in the book, from basic stitch patterns to shaping techniques to seaming and finishing. Attention is given to following patterns and identifying and correcting errors in your own knitting. Colour work - fair isle and intarsia - are covered briefly. And I was pleased to note that two methods, throwing ("British") and picking ("continental") are covered, making the books useful to a broader range of knitters.
Where the book disappoints, unfortunately, is in the projects section. The featured patterns are dull and dated, and are unlikely to elicit much enthusiasm from new or seasoned knitters. Don't let that deter you, though: otherwise, this book provides a good range of information for the beginning and intermediate knitter.
