You might have noticed a knitting sheep on your TV lately, which is a fabulous thing to see in general, but is also nice as this knitting sheep has a mission. Shaun the Sheep’s woolly mission is to help raise money for Wallace and Gromit’s Children’s Foundation. And it is being done by people all across the nation sitting down in parks and playgrounds and knitting tasty goodies.
The UK Hand Knitting Association, Simply Knitting magazine and ICHF exhibitions are encouraging people all over to hold their very own PicKnits. They have been happening from one end of the land to the other with PicKnits in Brighton, London and Bristol to name a few.
The idea is to get together to knit in the sunshine, raise money in as many ways as you can think of, and knit food goodies to add to an eventual huge life-size picnic. They are encouraging folks to knit any item at all that reminds them of the picnics of their childhood. Anything from battenburgs to beach balls is more than welcome. There are some patterns on their website to help you along, but the more original and inspired the better.
The PicKnit goodies that you create will be displayed at the PicKnit area of Creative Stitches and Hobbycraft Shows, along with a life-size knitted Shaun the Sheep. All information on the countrywide events, some free patterns for cupcakes, flowers and sarnies, an address to send you stitched sustenance to, and photos of the PicKnit madness can be found on the BHKA’s website. Or you can pop along to shows in Exeter, Harrogate, Glasgow, Cardiff or Birmingham this autumn to see the PicKnit in all its glory.
All money raised will go to the wonderful Wallace and Gromit’s Children’s Foundation. The foundation has been created to help improve the quality of life of sick children in hospitals and hospices across the UK.
