Yay or Nay: Making felt from your dead cat

Now, I'm a huge cat lover, and there are few things I appreciate more than feeling soft cat-fur slinking around my leg (while firmly attached to a live cat, you understand).

I'm also not too keen on the idea of cats dying, but having owned a few of my own, I accept that they do. When my last kitty popped his clogs, we buried him in the garden and remembered him with a little makeshift gravestone. But a hole in the ground and a rock isn't enough for some people it seems, as one crafter decided to gather up her dead pet's fur and make it into felt.

Clearly, for some, this could be a nice, tactile and long-lasting keepsake to remember a beloved pet by. But I'm not sure it's something I'd want to have around the house!

Have you ever made a craft item from the 'remains' of a dead pet, and do you think it's a good idea? Yay or nay...

Like Karin said, I always thought it'd be neat to get hair from my dogs to spin into yarn, but I don't I'd ever be able to touch a dead animal, let alone harvest its hair... I DO think it's cool though... just using something that the cat doesn't need anymore... (that sounds morbid but I don't mean it to be!)

  • Wow, that's really morbid. I love my cat but STILL.

Whoa...Abi, you got linked on craftgrrl LJ...it's creating quite a debate!

  • My old piano teacher used to collect her dog's hair after he got a hair cut (it was a Bichon Frise) and after she collected enough of it, she would knit him a dog coat out of his own hair. funny, eh!

  • I would have to be wishy washy and say "both" on this one. I would find it weird to collect the fibre after the pet has died, but not if it's from before.
