How to: Crochet finger puppets for kids

3%20finger%20puppets%2002.jpgHere's a fun and easy project that you can do quickly. Kids delight in these little crocheted finger puppets.

To make this toy, you'll need small amounts of yarn -- I prefer acrylic worsted weight yarn, but anything you're comfortable using will do -- and a suitable hook such as a 4 or 5 mm (G or H) hook. Because the finger puppets are so small, they take a very short time to make. Children can participate by choosing the colours and advising you on what features to add. It's a great way to keep little ones entertained and provide them with a lovely toy.

Follow the jump for instructions.

Round 1: Starting with an adjustable loop, single crochet 6 stitches.

Round 2: Make two single crochets into each stitch. You now have 12 stitches.

Round 3: On the third round, make two single crochets into one stitch, and one sc into the next. Repeat that sequence 5 more times until you have 18 stitches.

Round 4 until end: Now just crochet around in a spiral until the puppet is the length you want. Change colours frequently. Then make limbs and antennae by chaining lengths of yarn, or by knitting i-cord and sewing it on. Add button eyes, or embroider the features.

To vary shape, as with the puppet shown on the right, increase one more time:

Round 4: Single crochet twice into one stitch, and then once into the next two stitches. Repeat that sequence five times until that round is completed, giving you a total of 24 stitches.

Round 5-7: Crochet around, keeping a total of 24 stitches per round.

Round 8: Decrease by crocheting two stitches together followed by one single crochet. Repeat sequence five times until you have 18 stitches.

Round 9 to end: Carry on with 18-stitch rounds until the puppet is the correct length.

Have fun making your own cute wiggly puppets!
