Crochet pattern review: Squid in Love
Here's another winner of a pattern from Jessica Polka, designer of the Gentleman Prawn featured here recently. This time, I made a sweet little cephalopod from this Squid in Love pattern. The pattern includes complete instructions for two squid of slightly different shapes, but I'm afraid this particular little beauty is currently single, and is patiently awaiting the time when I can make another to be her companion.
As is typical with Jessica's patterns, the instructions are very clearly written out in plain English, using no abbreviations. The squid is quick to make, even for someone like me who is fairly slow at crocheting: I'd estimate 2.5 hours in total.
As interesting as it can be to take on a challenging project, I have a distinct preference for those patterns that are simple, quick, and elegant in design.
I used a 4 mm (F) hook, and some worsted weight yarn that I found at a thrift shop -- it's probably an acrylic/nylon blend, from the feel of it. It's a scratchier yarn that one would normally choose for a child's toy, but its stiffness is suitable to this pattern, and helps the squid hold its shape. For a prettier look and feel, any cotton worsted weight yarn would be suitable.

Oh, I love her! I posted about her branch coral pattern a while back. It was absolutely wonderful. The patterns really are fantastic.
