Making my first ragdoll: Part one

007.JPGSo far I've resisted all calls from well meaning Granparents to buy my daughter a baby doll. One reason is they are made from plastic and look freakish, but it's mainly because I have a romantic notion about making her first doll myself. That posed a problem, as I'd never made any type of toy before, but I didn't want that to stop me so I started the search for some simple ragdoll tutorials. I intend to post about my progress on any that I undertake, starting with this one by Miss Gioia.

It's a very simple pattern and I had no problems following it. The most fiddly bit for me (as a novice sewer) was stitching up the body which had the stuffed arms tucked inside. The form is now finished and you can see it in the picture to the left. I made it from two old napkins and the patterned body is from a gorgeous round tablecloth I picked up in a charity shop for £2.99 (top bargain!). I like to recycle fabrics wherever I can as it's cheaper, more gratifying and ultimately saves resources. I'm now faced with the challenge of creating a face, hair and outfit and will keep you up to speed with my progress.

  • I think that the idea of making your daughter's first doll is an excellent one, and it looks like you're off to a great start. It'll be great to see how it turns out!

It already looks extremely cute, I must say! If you need eyes, we found a whole box of them at a thrift market the other day...freaky ;)
