To add a decorate touch to a knitted item, you can embellish it with a simple crochet technique. The example here shows a knitted sweater with a contrasting crocheted design. This method allows you to create an improvised freehand design, and is easy to undo if you want to modify it or remove the design altogether. Sarah of Bella Knitting provides a handy tutorial, if you'd like to give this a try.
While I love to knit and crochet, I'm not sure I'm so keen on this particular look, at least not on a garment: it reminds me of the embroidered and jewelled sweaters that were (unfortunately) popular in the 1980s. Such a design might look better on a bag, I'm guessing. What do you think, yay or nay?
