Headphone cozy

Cases and covers for MP3 players and other electronic gadgets are everywhere in the craft world these days, but what about covers for the headphone cords? I'm always worried about wear and tear on my iPod headphones, and started thinking that there must be a way to protect them. Sure enough, I've found a couple of different versions made by crafty types. Follow the jump for details!

Over on Craftster, engrafted has made a set of knitted headphone sleeves. He made them by knitting i-cord (or, for more of a geek factor, iCord) directly around the wires, and then increasing stitches where the cord forks into two, and after the join, splitting the stitches in two sections and doing a smaller i-cord around each thinner wire. It's a simple and clever design, although not necessarily easily removed once it's knitted on. The project has proved to be extremely popular with Craftster members, and many people comment that it's a practical way to keep cats from chewing through cords. Scroll through the many comments to see other people's versions in various yarns.

Then, just yesterday, Ilovemystarbursts posted a crocheted version of this handy device by chaining three and then doing single crochets around the cord. As with the knitted version, when you get to the Y in the cord, increase and then revert to narrower tubes around each cord.

The key for either version is to use a fine weight of yarn (sock weight is probably good) and make small stitches -- unless you prefer a bulkier look and feel, in which case you can use worsted weight. What fun! I can't wait to try one of these methods.
