Inspiration: Rock 'n' roll embroidery

whitestripes.jpgLast month we brought you the heavy metal quilt, but it seems the latest craft to get the rock 'n' roll treatment is the delicate art of embroidery!

Jenny Hart, an artist based in Austin TX who is credited with 'single-handedly making embroidery cool', creates fabulous hand-sewn images of rock stars, including this one; a very good likeness of the White Stripes! Other stars she has immortalized in thread include Iggy Pop, Marianne Faithfull, Dolly Parton and female wrestler La Chingona! In addition to the rock portraits, Hart makes highly original landscape compositions on silk, denim and other fabrics.

Another great stitcher is UK-based designer Laura Lees. While her catwalk ranges that dazzled London Fashion Week are beyond the budget of most mortals, she does have an exciting capsule collection at Topshop, featuring beautifully embroidered rock-chick items at great prices, all covered in skullies, flames and other embellishments that anyone handy with a needle could take inspiration from!

If you'd like to try your hand at some bitchin' stitchin', Sublime Stitching has some great patterns available to download or buy here,
