Making my first rag doll: Part 2

045.JPGFurther to my post earlier this week I've now managed to give my first rag doll a face and some hair. To be honest I know the face could be a lot better, but in following the tutorial to make the body I made the mistake of not completing the face before it was all sewn up. I know that some rag doll makers do this and then use very long needles through the back of the doll's head to make a face, but as a novice this proved too difficult for me so I ended up using a mixture of embroidery and some felt stuck on with fabric glue.

I am particularly pleased with her hair, and because I used such thick wool I only had to attach it in one row around face at the front of the head. Because it's tied back you don't know she'd completely bald underneath! To attach the hair I used the method shown on this fabulous tutorial by Bowls-n-Annies (probably my next doll project in actual fact). You make loops with thread and then put a bundle of yarn into the loop and pull tight and tie in the middle. I used 3 pieces of yarn in each loop and it gave the doll a luxurious thick head of hair. You can see a picture of the back here.
