The English summer is looking a lot more like the English winter than it usually does this year. Damp bamboo needles and soggy yarn are not a good combination. So next year’s Stitch ‘n’ Beach holiday is particularly appealing, as us Brits are not likely to get a knitting tan line across our index finger over here.
Stitch ‘n’ Beach is a 10-day knitting cruise to the Caribbean, which leaves New York City on the 27th of February 2008. It will touch down at the sunny ports of Grand Turk, Tortola, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. In-between ports there are over 24 hours of knitting classes taught by the Queen of Stitch ‘n’ Bitch, Debbie Stoller, and other instructors. Evening SnB events include trunk shows (I have no idea), yarn tastings (yum) and relaxing gatherings where you can get your knit on with other holidaying stitchers.
If you get bored with the knit (I can’t picture it) then there’s a spa, a Culinary Arts Center, a pool, and a kids’ club for you to get shot of the wee ones. And there are a whole bunch of places to explore at all the different stops, so you don’t actually have to knit at all (though why you wouldn’t is beyond me).
It sounds like a knitter’s paradise. And if you think beach knitting sounds a bit impossible then check out the photo (courtesy of my good friend Annisa Chand). It can be done, it has been done, and the finished product was much less sandy than expected.
