Tuesday Trends: Working with hemp

house%20of%20hemp.jpgIf hearing the word 'hemp' conjures up illegal substance, you really need to think again! For all kinds of reasons, hemp is a great material to work with, it's far better for the environment than many other yarns, and it makes beautiful, wearable and surprisingly soft garments.

Hemp is considered a 'green' fiber because it can be grown almost anywhere, meaning it doesn't need to be dowsed in toxic chemicals and can also help people in hostile environments make a living. It also leaves the soil it's planted on in great condition. It can even get you high...but that's not what we're interested in here!

If you've not worked with hemp before, a great place to start is House of Hemp, which is not only a store selling beautiful and unique handmade items and materials, but a great information source on this very versatile plant. They even have a directory packed full of other places to find hemp, and it you want to become part of it all, you can join their 'hemp hub'.
