Yay or nay: What Not to Knit/Crochet

whatnot%20dollface.jpgWhat Not to Crochet showcases some of the more, um, interesting crochet projects found online, along with mocking commentary. Some of the projects shown are, indeed, frightening, in my view -- like the one shown here -- but really it's a matter of taste and personal opinion. At least a few of the crocheted pieces featured would be considered stylish by many, and don't seem like they merit such a put-down.

What Not to Knit is a similar blog that was started as a take-off of What Not to Crochet. Both sites imitate You Knit What??, an entertaining collection of knitted items that are truly over-the-top and silly. (YKW is no longer active, but you can peruse the archives.)

I think that for such web sites to be successful, the commentary needs to be sharp and amusing. But I imagine I'd be very unhappy if my own work ever appeared on one of these places! What do you think of these sites? Yay or nay?

Yay or nay: What Not to Knit/Crochet - Comments

Defintely a YAY! I think there's at least two bloggers for WNTC and they don't pick on ppl's own work, just stuff that designers churn out.

    i think theyre funny away!

  • Maryann

Kacee - The blogger for both of these doesn't comment much at all, she mostly leaves it up to her readers to comment, and they can be quite sharp.

And you're wrong that she doesn't allow people to disagree. I've been reading and commenting on WNTC for much of the time it's been active and I disagree with the postings on a semi-regular basis. None of my comments have ever been denied.

So I guess you all know my opinion...

    YAY.

  • Abi

Well I certainly don't approve of moderating one's own comments! ;)

Anyway, I think the idea of 'what not to crochet' is a fun one in principle, but I do have to agree that the choices of pics are sometimes a bit ill-advised; the ones that are meant to be sculptural art forms definitely shouldn't be being judged against items that are meant to be worn. Maybe they're just short of material at the moment. Oh, and the writing could do with a bit of spicing up, too...

Gotta say though, the pic that Tricia chose is a definite example of an abomination that really deserves its place in the hall of shame! Ugh...;)

I found the author of What Not to Crochet's tone to be pretty negative and not really in a funny way. They moderate their comments and it just seems like he/she just couldn't stand someone to disagree with them, and then make some sort of schoolyard "oh yeah, well, you're ugly" kind of comment back (only not even as funny as that would be if you said it in the right context.) If you're going to blog, you need to be somewhat likeable, even if in a snarky, sarcastic way. Or at least be funny. I kept wanting it to be funny like gofugyourself and it didn't even come close.

I say 'nay.' The site is just plain mean. Many of the projects are more sculptural and many people are blasting projects that are meant to be worn as art and really have some obvious talent behind the design. Positive comments on the posts are not really welcome. If the site posted more 'extreme' projects and invited both positive and negative comments, rather than starting off posting a picture as 'fugly' it might be more interesting.
