Platform for Art: Knitting Circle

southwimble.jpg “This train will terminate at…knitting.” Not the kind if announcement you would expect to hear while shoehorned into a rush hour tube train on the London Underground’s District and Circle Line. Bizarrely enough though it is a likely one as something knitty has taken over the walls of South Wimbledon train station this autumn.

Platform for Art present’s an exhibition of work by students from Wimbledon College of Art in collaboration with Morden Women’s Institute. Students at the college run a weekly knitting club, and got together with the local WI for this amazing project.

Each piece was passed around the circle, each person contributing a part to make some fabulously quirky wall decorations which combine the knitting (and the odd dropped stitch) of all of the knitters involved.

southwimble2.jpg The exhibits “blend the decisions, conversations, skills and accidental stitches of the knitters.” And some of the conversations that happened during the meetings have been transcribed too, so visitors have a full idea of the experience of being part of a knitting group.

In October 2007, the knitting club will give a live performance in the shop windows, which will also show London Underground’s historical involvement with knitting as part of the war effort. The exhibition itself runs until the 12th of October.
