Make your own wedding dress (are you crazy?)

make%20your%20own%20wedding%20dress.JPG

Planning a wedding is already stressful enough for most people, but if you want an added challenge, why not make your own dress?

On the plus side, no visits to stuffy bridal parlours, and you'll have the pleasure of creating something utterly unique, to your exact measurements and with all the detailing that you ever dreamed of -- skills and time permitting. Sound good? Once you've got a few ideas together, take a look at the patterns at Sew Direct, the official site for McCall, Butterick and Vogue patterns.

The bridal range is pretty good, though naturally there are a few humdingers, and the designs look like they'll be easy to customise so you can get a designer look for a fraction of the price. Prices start around £13.50 but remember to factor in fabric and other materials costs.

I am this mad. This is exactly what I'm doing. Though I'm half cheating... I'm making the skirt and paying someone to make me a custom corset top

actually making your own dress is probably the best thing you could do as a woman, especially for the memories, and the fact that you can say you made it. it would be a perfect thing to show off and to pass down to your children. wow, great idea :)

I wouldn dream of wasting so much money on something i could make myself.

Wondering where the wedding dress pattern shown on this website is from? the one that is backless and has a drape neck? Love it and can't find it anywhere!

Hi Rachel,

I happened to be looking through 2000+ patterns on this site and came across this exact pattern! Hope you look back at this post and find it! Here is the link: http://www.sewingpatterns.com/search.php?new_category=search&search=dresses

Welcome me to the club, ladies! I'm crazy and making my own gown too...a rather ambitious ballgown with fully embroidered top and beads everywhere. On the sane side, I still have 10 months (I started making it about 2-3 months ago on my free time), I'm spending only $100 (or lower) for the materials, and I've been sewing clothes for my dolls, and eventually, myself, since I was in elementary school. So given that, I guess I'm not that crazy making my gown after all. Plus, at least I'm getting the design I want, and be beaming, not just with love, but also with pride on my project, at the big event.
