Burda Style has a great how-to on creating a print effect using an appliqué technique.

A great way to use up leftover fabric, the technique involves sewing motifs you've cut out on to a garment at regular intervals. While this method may be a bit time-consuming, it's very easy to do and the results are well worth the effort. Once you've got your pile of cutoffs, I'd suggest sitting down in front of a good film and getting sewing.
