One Seam Convertible Dress (in an afternoon)

convertibledress2.jpgEmily Tan writes: When I came across this fantastic one-seam convertible dress by the lovely Rowena of Rostichery, I could not wait to cobble it together. One dress, a hundred looks, and it looked so easy to make.

As it turns out, it was really simple and quick! I managed this in one afternoon, hand-sewn (I don't have a sewing machine), and had loads of fun figuring out different ways to wrap it. This is a dress every girl has to try, it's perfect for the summer, the hardest part is getting the material, and if you're not a sewer - this will get you started. Read on for more images, ideas on how to wear the dress, and tips.

convertibledress1.jpgThese are just two ways to wear the convertible dress. For more ways to wrap the dress check out the convertible dress flickr group, and the incredibly long thread at Crafster.

Tips

  • The dress is basically a circle skirt with two very long wide straps of material that can be wrapped in various ways. You can modify the design by altering the skirt pattern - changing it to a tulip skirt, pencil skirt, or A-line, whichever you choose!

  • Do NOT skimp on the straps. If you cut them too narrow the dress will not wrap as well. Be generous, if in doubt, make them wider.

  • A stretchy jersey material is best, but most lightweight fabrics will do. Just remember you're wrapping layers and layers around yourself you don't want it to be too heavy.

  • Try contrasting colours on the skirt and strap for a gorgeous two-toned dress. It also helps with finding enough material.

  • More ideas can be found from the pics in this article on commercial convertible dresses. The Karanina dress looks almost identical in pattern to the one-seam convertible dress and they're charging $308! Inconceivable!

Hi Dani, Thanks for your kind words, and I'm sorry about the link. It was correct at the time but Rowena changed it around after this post. The link has been corrected. But just in case, here's the link to the dress pattern I used.
