How to: Crocheted chilli peppers

crochet_chillis.jpgThese fabulous amigurumi chilli peppers were made for a 'chilli cook-off' party by Aromy of Tipped, who has very kindly sent me the pattern for the jolly crocheted veggies. Use them for anything you like -- from unusual jewellery to cheery decor for the home.

Read on after the jump for her instructions

I used yarn and a bit of poly-fill to crochet these little amigurumi chilli peppers, which I whipped a bunch of these chilli peppers up in one afternoon for Tipped's Chilli Cook-off during the weekend. I made 8 for each of our chilli chefs, and also sewed on little pins on the back so that they can pin them to their shirts.

They are super easy, and super cute! Remember to single stitch around, rather than joining rounds. I also like to use acrylic yarn. It's cheap and a little stretchy. I used similar yarns for the chilli body and chilli cap. Gauge isn't important, but I like to make sure my yarn weight semi-matches my crochet needle.

Chilli Body (Red, Orange, or Yellow-- chilli colors):
Rnd 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: *1 sc in two sts, 2 sc in one st* (8 sts)
Rnd 3 to 12 (or however long you want it): sc all around (8 sts)
Bind off.

Chilli Cap (green yarn):
Rnd 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6 sts)
Rnd 2: *1 sc in two sts, 2 sc in one st* (8sts)
Rnd 3: *1 sc in three sts, 2 sc in one st* (10 sts)
Rnd 4-5: sc all sts (10 sts)
Bind off leaving 3 to 4 inch tail.
Make a little loop with a double knot, and tuck it inside the cap. Pull the loop through.

Other steps:
1: Stuff the chilli body and make sure it's nice and plump.
2. Put a little bit of poly-fill in the chilli cap.
3. Your chilli cap should fit comfortably over the chilli body, use the tail from the cap to sew it to the body.
4. Bend it a bit to give the chilli it's shape.

Voila!

I sort of made one of these, with a few changes so it was more like a jalapeno.

Also topped it with a little sombrero. It turned out great. Thanks for the start, I would've been sooooo lost without it.
