Crafting for Charity: it's not just for Christmas

knit-for-peace.jpgCharity crafting projects usually hit fever pitch just before Christmas, then die a death in the new year when the whole 'goodwill' thing gets put on the back-burner for another year. So I'm happy to say that this year, there still seem to be plenty of crafting projects that benefit good causes going on, including some new ones that hadn't crossed my radar before.

Follow the jump for details, and if you know of any others, please do send them my way!

Knit for Peace

The idea behind this project, organised by Good Gifts, is that you literally help 'knit together' fractured communities by sponsoring knitting groups comprised of women from different and in some cases mutually hostile communities in war-torn parts of the world. The groups meet to make much-needed warm clothes for babies, children and elderly people, as stereotypes and tensions bite the dust.

If you're feeling really generous, or want to club together with crafty frends, you can sponsor a knitting group for £250. Donations of £25 or £35 will buy a week's worth of knitting and yarn and replacement wool respectively. More info here.

Loving Hands

If you can't decide which causes to support with your crafting efforts, Loving Hands is a good one to go for as it regularly support numerous charities including Save The Children and the Linda McDonald Foundation, with its members' donations.

Operation Elderly

If you'd like to help vulnerable older people through the cold British winter, check out Operation Elderly, a group that makes Lap Quilts and blankets for the elderly residents in nursing homes around the UK. The donations are invaluable to those who don't have friends and family around them to visit.
