Baubles don't have to be bright and shiny things - they can be matte and tactile too. Crochet baubles look fab interspersed with the more traditional foil/glass ones too, and lend your Christmas tree a folksy, handmade feel that your guests will love.
I found a really good illustrated tutorial here on 6icthusfish's blog, which shows you how to make these colourful gem and ric-rac decorated baubles using a simple crochet technique. Definitely a good one to work on by the fireplace in these cold, uninviting nights!
But if crochet isn't your thing (and lord knows it isn't mine) then there are still lots of fun ways to jazz up a bauble without picking up a hook. I'm particularly fond of Amanda's Santa Belly bauble, which barely even requires instructions! I quite like the idea of sticking a cute little ping-pong ball face on the top as well...
