Illusion or shadow knitting is a bit of a tricky one to explain. There are tons of patterns out online but it's hard to get across exactly how illusion knitting works with a mere photograph or a few lines.
Thankfully Alice Bell, of Slipped Stitch, has taken the time to show how illusion knitting works as she casts on her sixth illusion knit Rosalind DNA scarf. She also illustrates how the finished knit works with a short video which make it all clear in just 18 seconds.
Other excellent free patterns with fine examples of illusion knitting patterns are the Storm Moon Knit's Harry Potter Dark Mark Scarf, Ysolda's piratey Skull Scarf and Slipped Stitch's own Cheshire Cat-flavoured Alice's Illusion Socks.
