Ravelry rules over Facebook

ravelry_pic.jpgEveryone who is anyone in the world of yarn craft has one other thing in common aside from our love of stringplay. Ravelry is the online home of most of our woolly thoughts and friends. Why? For more reasons than most of us have balls of yarn in our stash (and in the case of most that's a whole lot of reasons). So it's always nice when the rest of the world catches up to what we have known all along.

Slate Magazine published A Tight-Knit Community: Why Facebook can't match Ravelry, the social network for knitters earlier this month and it's a very interesting outsider's view of a site we love and have seen grow around us.

In particular I like this part:

"On Ravelry ... there's a powerful force that keeps people in line--knitting. Because everything you say on the site is associated with your profile, and because your profile houses everything you've knitted and want to knit (which, for many people, is more personal than a name and email address), members feel they have a strong stake in the site. For that reason, there's a strong incentive not to speak out of turn."

Well worth a read whether you Ravel or not.
