Earlier in the year I posted about weaver of words Margaret Atwood joining in the Gone Birds project and vowing to knit an extinct bird and post it on Ravelry.
I'm happy to say that Margaret's bird is now complete, and which of our forgotten feathered friends did she go for? The magnificent Great Auk.
Though the project has yet to appear on Ravelry, there was a story published in today's Independent showing off the fine woolly winged-creature and explaining, in Margaret's own words, how she found the experience of bringing a bird to life through knitting.
Just the line "I knitted my Great Auk in the Arctic, which was where I happened to be." is enough to make me want to read more.
Find out more about the Ghost of Gone Birds project here. The exhibition arrives in London on November 2nd at Shoreditch's Rochelle School. Flutter over there and see it!
