Handmade Christmas Countdown: knitted Christmas tree

knitted_xmas_tree1.pngExtreme Christmas craft for a good cause is just what's needed to spread the fibre-based festive cheer, and Dorset's giant handknitted Christmas tree ticks all those crafty boxes.

The 10-foot handknit tree, made up of 1200 squares and featuring over 200 decorations, took nine months to create and is the work of three knitting groups combining their woolly powers for that warm fuzzy feeling you can only get from knitting something for charity.

The construction is based around a metal frame so there's no fear of it sagging, it's a sturdy beast under all that wool and fluff.

The handmade hunk of woolly love can be seen strutted it's festive stitched stuff at St Aldhelm's Church in Poole, Dorset, until Christmas Eve. After this it will be taken apart and turned into a load of cosy blankets for Sri Lankan and Romanian charities.

Let's hope they like green.
