Handmade Christmas Countdown: Ochikeron's Christmas Sushi

Looking for the perfect festive nibble to pass around your Christmas party? Or perhaps you're just really, really hungry? Either way, this brilliant video from Japanese chef Ochikeron shows you how to a) make the world's easiest sushi and b) eat seasonally - which in my book, means eating things shaped like Christmas trees.

Can't find some of the ingredients? Your local Asian market or large supermarket will have loads of 'em - never fear!

ochikeron.jpgPlus, I think that in the quickly-evolving field of Christmas tree cookery, some flexibility is allowed - for example, I might switch out the somewhat environmentally dodgy toro, or fatty tuna, for some local fish my fishmonger recommends. You could even go vegetarian with some nice tofu - perhaps fried, then chopped and sprinkled with soy sauce and sesame oil? Tis the season to experiment!

Here's a handy list of sushi and sashimi ingredients to inspire you.

Left: Chef Ochikeron takes a well-deserved break after single-handedly creating a mashup of a Christmas tree and er, sushi.

Do check out Ochikeron's YouTube channel, where she continues to take the Christmas tree in new culinary directions.

Happy cooking, and merry Christmas!
