Valentine's craft: Painted heart cushion

Cross stitch can be awesome when it's done in a creative way and there are some fantastic new artists really stretching the boundaries when it comes to this traditional art form.

But, cross stitch is a little time consuming and we don't all have the time (sorry, but it's true!). Painting your cross stitches on the other hand sounds like a fantastic technique.

Craftberry bush have painted their cushion with a cross stitch pattern in the shape of a heart and I think it looks fantastic.

Now, I'm not one to change my decor with the seasons (purely for lack of time reasons!), but this is a cushion I may well create to go in my daughter's bedroom. It's a lovely design and the painted crosses trick the eye, there's something quite pleasing about it.

Lucy, the blogger behind CraftBerry Bush, also created a cross stitch design mural (in fact this came first) and has made a beautiful composition on her mantel piece to go with it all, just in time for the Valentine's season.

The original design for the mural on her mantel came from inspiration of the artist Elline Pellinkhof's work.

So, when you need to update your cushions with a new cover or just want to surprise a loved one, reach for a plain piece of fabric, sew it up quick on the machine and get your paints out.

If it looks as great as this, everyone'll think you spent a fortune on it!
