Crafty Art: portrait made from 9000 corks

cork_art.jpg

Artists who can see art materials in every day things never cease to impress me. I do love a bit of upcycled art, especially on a grand scale. Artist Scott Gundersen conjures arty magic from a humble pile of regular old corks.

The artist took 50 hours and over 9000 corks to create a portrait of Grace, a woman who survived genocide in Rwanda, for the ArtPrize award

In an example of upcycled art amazingness he sourced the corks from local restaurants and businesses. Each cork is naturally stained by the bottles rather than coloured to his requirements.

This time lapse video shows Scott creating the corking example of crafty art.

I love reading your articles, but imagine my delight when I read a feature on something I will get to experience in person!! I live only minutes from the ArtPrize home in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. Thank you so much for bringing light to a project I might have missed amid the hundreds of exhibits. Will you be featuring any other artists who have created splendid displays for ArtPrize?

Hi Ceilidh, thanks for the props!  We love crafty art.  Please let us know if you have any tips for future ArtPrize folks to profile - sometimes it's a lot easier to appreciate the 'wow factor' of a piece of art in person!  If you give us a tip we'll definitely give you a shout in the finished article...thanks for reading!
