How to: Make the Fort Greene Cocktail

fort_greene_cocktail.jpgAbove: almost as lovely as Fort Greene Park in the spring, the Fort Greene cocktail gives may induce urban fervour.

New York is a fantastic place to enjoy a cocktail, and there are many fine libations named for parts of the city - Manhattan is of course the first to come to mind, but there's also the Park Avenue, the Bronx, the Tribeca, and many more.

Until now, however, one of my favorite New York neighborhoods has been neglected. The home of BAM, Cake Man Raven and Frank's, beautiful Fort Greene is a north Brooklyn 'hood that went through rough times in the 1970s and 1980s, only to be re-evaluated and lovingly appreciated in the 1990s and 2000s. You've got to love a place where both Walt Whitman and Spike Lee have found a home.

And now ... it has its own cocktail! Danielle at Habeas Brulée has just posted the Fort Greene, formulated by her partner in crime, Dave.

I love how they've held the drink-in-progress up to the light for this photograph - I believe a cocktail should be a treat for the eyes as well as the NMDA receptors.

This is a great time of year to enjoy this grapefruit and cucumber-based cocktai,l as citrus are still in season in the Southern Hemisphere. Yummy! (Luckily gin is in season year-round - I recommend Plymouth for this recipe.)
