Above: Nigella's Guinness cake is a great alternative to regular chocolate cake and yummy too!
When you look for chocolate cake recipes on the web, you can find a huge amount of variety and yummy looking treats. It can be a little tricky picking which is the best choice.
So, I thought I'd take a little of the confusion away and bring you my top ten picks of the best chocolate cake recipes the internet has to offer (plus a little secret recipe of my own!)
Grab a cuppa, check your cupboard for ingredients, and make a shopping list, as you browse these little beauties. No calories being counted here I'm afraid!
I should add that they are in no particular order. It is, after all, down to taste and it would be wrong for me to choose a number one or number ten according to what type of chocolate I prefer. The only thing for it is to make and sample all ten, and then you can let me know which is the best!
1. Nigella's Chocolate Guinness cake.
This recipe from Nigella Lawson was recommended to me by my sister-in-law and was a real success for my brother's birthday. The cake is really rich and moist, helped in large part to the large dosage of Guinness in the mix.
One of my colleagues recommended this Malteser cake to me. Apparently the use of Horlicks in the recipe really imitates the inside of a Malteser. Also, the Maltesers go really gooey on the top, and taste even better after a day or so.
3. Chocolate Ice Cream Cake. (left)
Using ice cream in the cake mix makes this cake from Omnomicon super moist, and is a little different to the regular chocolate cakes you can make.
4. Best Ever Chocolate Fudge Layer Cake.
This cake from Kraft has over 507 reviews, nearly all of which are five stars. Definitely one to try and chocolate fudge is a firm favourite with most people.
This recipe from Cake On The Brain promises to be very chocolate-y and superior in flavour to other chocolate cupcake recipes.
6. Chocolate Oatmeal Pudding Breakfast Cake.
Chocolate for breakfast? Sounds great to me! Vegan friendly and bursting with healthy goodness to start the day, what's not to love about this recipe from Family Fresh Cooking.
7. Ultimate S'more Anniversary Cake
When I lived in America I totally fell in love with S'mores - melted marshmallow, a chunk of chocolate (melted from the heat of the melted marshmallow) and sandwiched between two Graham Crackers: heaven! So, the thought of a cake like that by 'Fat Girl trapped in a skinny body'? This I have to try!
This fantastic cake from What Katie Ate looks so good. It has mountains of frosting swirled over it ... which can only be a good thing!
9, Chocolate Almond Torte. (Right)
Ok, so technically not a cake but a torte, this amazing recipe from Zoe Bakes has no flour. So it is great for the wheat-free person in your life.
10. My Secret Ingredient Chocolate Cake.
Last but not least, I thought I'd share my own special chocolate cake recipe.
I'm afraid it's not a cheap chocolate cake to make, but I can guarantee that you will get compliments on the taste, and no one will guess the secret ingredient!
