Crafty Art: Ben Heine's pencil drawn photography

Ben Hein2.jpg

Ben Heine is an artist who uses the craft of the pencil together with the power of the camera to create awesome images that fuse the two skills together.

Hailing from the Ivory Coast, and now residing in Belgium, Ben is a visual artist, creating these awesome images as part of his 'Pencil Vs. Camera' series.

The images always have Ben's hand in view, as well as the contrast between the black and white of the pencil and an often very colourful background.

Ben says of his art "I just make art for people. I want them to dream and forget their daily troubles... each new creation should tell a story and generate an intense emotion, like a poem, like a melody."

He stumbled upon the concept of Pencil Vs. Camera whilst in his family home in Braives, Belgium. He uses various techniques to achieve the result. One of these is to take a photograph, draw a pencil drawing of part of the image, take another shot of him holding the image and overlay that over the original photo.

It's a fantastic concept and works so well. Part pop art, part surrealism, the end result is quite playful and you can tell that Ben has fun creating the image.
