Friday Crafty Film: clean street art - The Hastings Moths Project

hastings_moths_howaboutno.jpgAGH! There's a giant moth eating my house! Clean street art turns the idea of spray can street art on its head and creates canvases from the world's most grimy places. The Hastings Moth Project has illustrated this idea with an ambitious and rather lovely set of clean street art installations.

The Hastings Moths were cleaned onto a nine of the city's spaces along to coast from Hastings Old Town to Burton St Leonards. The idea was inspired by "a bold statement on the state of metamorphosis the historic town finds itself in at this time." The project was part of a town-wide 'Art in Spaces' scheme initiated by Hastings Borough Council with funding from the Arts Council."

See how they bought the moths to life in this inspiring video:

The moths were still there to be seen nine months ago, according to the comments. I wonder if they're still there today. Clean art is a good way to go graffiti crazy without leaving anything but an image behind. If you're nervous about releasing your own street art into the wild this could be a good way to go.

The group are still up to their art in other ways too. Keep an eye on their website for more news. And you can see more images of the project over at Graffoto.
