Friday Crafty Film: The sand art of Joe Mangrum

Joe Mangrum.jpg

Artist Joe Mangrum is an artist from New York who uses sand as his medium to create huge, beautiful street art.

Starting in the Autumn of 2009, he has travelled all over the USA, making art out of sand, often on the street. He says he chooses sand over other mediums as it only lasts for a short amount of time, allowing lots of people to enjoy his work, but with the ability to sweep it up at the end of the day.

Using the sand and only his hands, Joe creates intricate flower like designs, improvising as he goes, which you can watch him doing in this awesome film shot in San Francisco by Cedric Pilard.

He says that he often changes direction according to his environment and how he feels on the day. So his pieces often start out as one thing and evolve into another idea as he goes.

The colours really pop and together with the texture look almost velvet like.

Such a cool idea for street art, I would love to see Joe creating one of these pieces in person. What do you think of this sand art? Have you seen any cool and unusual street art?
