Stockholm-based Argentinian artist Eka Acosta turns the challenging raw material of wire net into a menagerie's worth of boldly colored sculptures of animals - these must be seen to be believed!
Right now here at Crafty HQ we're loving these big, gorgeous sculptures by Parisian-born, Buenos Aires-bred Eka Acosta. This Stockholm-based sculptor uses wire net, an incredibly fickle material, to create the forms of a plethora of animals. He's made everything from a giant fish to a series of moose and deer, and shows no sign of stopping.
In the UK, Acosta has made appearances at the Saatchi Gallery, and is widely exhibited in his adopted Sweden. But check out his website for a treasury of photos of works dating back to 2004, when his wire sculptures were a lot smaller. Watching this incredibly inventive artist progress from relatively teeny lizards to massive squid is truly amazing.
I have to say, I vastly prefer these to Damien Hirst's famous animal-based works - at least Mr. Acosta can claim that no creatures, cuddly or not, were harmed in the production of these fantastic armatures! And when it comes to images of animals, that's pretty important to me.
